If you’re looking for an affordable and easy way to expand your Calgary home this year, then adding a sunroom, also known as a solarium, should be high on your list. A four-season Sunroom or Solarium is an added living space that can increase property value and add year-round enjoyment of your home.
Ease of Installation
One of the main attractions of a Calgary sunroom is that they can be installed directly onto your existing deck, which greatly reduces the costs and time involved in the installation process. If you don’t have a deck, the lightweight frames means you need relatively little in the way of foundations, and you can often have the whole construction done in the space of 2 weeks.
What Sunrooms Are Made Of
A high-quality Sunroom or Solarium will typically be made of tempered glass and aluminum. These are robust structures that require little to no maintenance. The tempered glass allows sunlight to pass through and will trap the heat. This creates an incredibly comfortable environment and saves energy. This also saves money on heating bills especially in the variable climate around Calgary. Simple tricks, like insulated blinds and thicker carpets, can also decrease your heating usage, as well as providing a softer focus for the room.
Differences Between 3-Season and 4-Season Sunrooms
An All-Season enclosure can be enjoyed in all four seasons, specifically it can be used year-round in complete comfort. In comparison to a three season room, which is mainly heated and cooled by sunlight and heat from nearby rooms. However, a small heater in a three-season room can bring the temperature up on all but the coldest winter days. Four season rooms and solariums are built to be heated and cooled with maximum efficiency, allowing them to be used no matter the season or weather. They can connect to your homes existing HVAC system, and, with the right level of wall insulation, you shouldn’t see a dramatic increase in the heating costs for your entire house. There’s something cozy about sitting a room surrounded by windows, warm and snug, as a wild Alberta storm rages outside. In the summer time, you can open the windows and doors to a pair of external fly screens, enjoying the breeze and warmth without having to be bothered by strong sunlight or the endless Calgary bugs.
What a Sunroom Can Be Used For
A four-season Sunroom or Solarium is a versatile space. In Alberta, many families will use their added Sunroom or Solarium as a beautiful social area for holidays year round, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. Sunrooms also make for excellent guest bedrooms, and simple furniture solutions, such as futons or fold out couches, allow for you to use the room for entertaining during the day, and a bedroom at night. Many people who work from home find that their new four-season sunroom is an ideal place to make a home office, as it has plenty of natural light, and the larger floor plan gives you plenty of space for storage and desks. Finally, your new sunroom makes for a perfect TV-free living room. Anyone with multiple generations under one roof will know how important it is to have different spaces for different people, as well as communal space to share. Creating a more social space with no TV, and possible a stove or fireplace, will give you a quieter space as well as a space to really engage in some quality family time. If you appreciate comfortably enjoying the beauty of the outdoors while being protected by the elements, a four season room or solarium is the right choice for you.
The Desert Sun Patios Difference
At Desert Sun, Sunrooms and Solariums are built with materials only manufactured in North America. The glass that is used is fully tempered top to bottom which is well above building code. Each pane comes with different glazing options, from a simple air filled double glazed to a more expensive, but more heat efficient, triple glaze filled with argon. The aluminum used is of the highest quality providing structural integrity and the highest resistance to chipping and fading. Even though it’s a naturally lightweight material, it will easily support any of the different roof types. You’ll need to pick one that matches the style of your home, as well as one that will cope with the snowfall from a typical Calgary winter. Desert Sun will consult carefully to make the transition from the original home to your four-season sunroom as seamless as possible, as well as discussing the best roofing materials for your budget.

I was planning to have a solarium built in our home so that my wife will have a place to put her plants even in the winter season. Knowing that it is made of tempered glass and aluminum is quite reassuring when it comes to its durability. That said, I’ll be sure to do some research to see what potential designs for a solarium I could follow. Thanks!
